Amazing how the past continues to inform the present, especially in the realm of music. The legacies of past jazz masters continue to direct and reinforce the artistic choices of current practitioners. Bassist/composer Hans Glawischnig has taken his cues and inspiration from his heroes, including firsthand advice.

On his second Sunnyside Recordings release, Glawischnig debuts a new trio featuring his own explorations of the acoustic bass guitar on Jahira (Jan. 31, 2011). “Ja-hi-ra” is an acronym for the group’s credo, “jazz history roundabout,” which applies to the ensemble’s use of elements from the entire breadth of jazz’s history to inform their sound.

The Austrian born Glawischnig has been a first call bassist in New York for over a decade. His playing has been especially highly regarded by the Latin jazz community as he has been featured in groups led by artists like Paquito D’Rivera, Miguel Zenon and the late, great Ray Barretto. It was while touring with Barretto’s New World Spirit ensemble that Glawischnig was initially led to the acoustic bass guitar.

Barretto wasn’t a fan of the electric bass guitar that was used during the tour because of the limitations in the instrument’s sound. Glawischnig found an acoustic bass guitar that provided the sonic palette that both were looking for and a flexibility that wasn’t available with the double bass.

It took some time but Glawischnig has finally found a perfect showcase for his work on the acoustic bass guitar. He has decided on a trio setting because of his regard for the intimacy of the smaller ensembles of Sonny Rollins and Charlie Haden. The musicians that he chose for the group are exceptional young talents, saxophonist Samir Zarif and drummer Eric Doob.

Jahira begins with a dancing “Once I Hesitate” that showcases the blustery, emotive tenor of Zarif over Glawischnig and Doob’s dynamic rhythmic attack. The title track shows the group’s dynamic and emotive range as tension is built through rhythmic intensity against a floating sax melody later dying away for lovely solo features for bass and sax. “From the Essence” provides a somber theme over a subdued but lush accompaniment. “Crow Point” is named after a beach near Glawischnig’s mother’s home and evidences the incendiary element of the trio.

A tour of Italy was the inspiration for “Calabria,” an evocative piece with a mysterious, romantic feel. Bud Powell’s “Celia” is a swinging number evocative of the work done by saxophonists Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh. “Alondra” provides a mild Latin flavor with an appealing pop flair. Sam River’s “Beatrice” is suited well for this striped down ensemble, allowing the classic melody to stand out. Electronic effects change the group’s dynamic as Glawischnig applies them to the acoustic bass guitar on “Shock Value,” adding a more funky inflection.

Glawischnig’s trio is an extremely dynamic and adventurous ensemble. On Jahira, the group presents a diverse and moving program of music that is modern yet reverential towards the past. The respect for the tradition and influence of the masters make this an extremely successful musical experience.
